The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) manages the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, the UK’s national laboratory for fusion research, and hosts the Joint European Torus (JET), the worlds largest experimental fusion device, on behalf of scientists from 28 countries.

UKAEA also offers its specialist skills and experience, in areas including advanced materials, robotics, modelling and virtual engineering, to customers worldwide, and works closely with UK industry and science to increase trade and establish joint projects overseas. UK fusion expertise includes remote handling, robotics, tritium fuel cycle, magnets, vacuum systems and programme management.

Supply Chain Support

We have a great opportunity for an entry level Supply Chain Support to join the UKAEA. As the Supply Chain Support you will provide support to the Procurement team, for the delivery of supply chain events and campaigns, whilst ensuring compliance to UKAEA/BEIS procedures and processes. You will also update the supply chain resources, including the procurement pipeline and procurement supply chain documents.

The Procurement team provides a fast-paced work environment and a variety of tasks to get involved with. Working within the supply chain is both stimulating and challenging as we work on innovative solutions to supply chain problems. You will get the opportunity to speak to stakeholders across all areas and levels within the business, as well as external stakeholders within the supply chain.

Turbulence and Transport Group Leader

UKAEA is looking for a Turbulence and Transport Group Leader to lead in its effort to improve our understanding of turbulence and transport in tokamak plasmas. The Group* works closely with national and international collaborators, and this exciting leadership role will involve you directly in: developing and exploiting state-of-the-art turbulence simulations; improving the predictive capability of reduced transport models; validating turbulence simulations and transport models against data from experiments including MAST-U and JET; and predicting performance in future devices.

Fusion Engineering Business Strategist

The UKAEA are looking for a Fusion Engineering Business Strategist to help with the very unique challenge of defining the pathway to the commercialisation of fusion and shaping the direction of the STEP programme which sets out along this path. The role will provide a strategic perspective to the authority on activities which could advance the environment in which STEP is delivered. Your work will enable an ecosystem in which STEP can succeed and ultimately facilitate the commercialisation of fusion within the context of a wider decarbonised energy system.

You will provide input to the business case development for funding of the multibillion-pound STEP programme through to its completion targeted for 2040. You will be expected to produce technical reports and peer review the work of others and in return will get the opportunity to present your findings both within the programme and at a range of domestic and international fora.

Head of Innovation

We are seeking a commercially astute, influential and collaborative Head of Innovation to enable UKAEA to effectively develop commercial opportunities arising from the fusion programme. You will be responsible for leading and managing UKAEA’s activities to identify and develop technical innovations with potential applications outside the fusion programme, and to translate these into commercial activity.

Working closely with all of our business units, you will support major programmes such as ‘STEP’ and will work with the Executive Office to measure and report outcomes, particularly economic impact.

You will have direct experience of technology development from R&D to commercial exploitation and must be degree qualified in a relevant discipline.
