OSCAR (Operational System for Coral Assembly and Restoration)

Operational System for Coral Assembly and Restoration

OSCAR (Operational System for Coral Assembly and Restoration) is a world-first automated coral restoration system developed by McLaren Accelerator in partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and the Australian Institute of Marine Science. The project demonstrates how the engineering methodologies, rapid innovation and problem-solving culture developed in Formula 1 can be applied to tackle global environmental challenges.

Designed to transform reef restoration, OSCAR automates the assembly of coral cradles, a process that was previously completed by hand. By reducing assembly time from 90 seconds to just 10 seconds, the system has the potential to increase annual restoration capacity from around 100,000 corals to more than one million. The model on display highlights how cross-industry collaboration, advanced engineering and systems thinking can deliver scalable solutions with real-world impact, helping accelerate the recovery of coral reef ecosystems worldwide.
