Mat-Tech Joining Technologies Limited
About us
Mat-Tech specialise in the design, development, production, optimisation and testing of joining solutions such as vacuum brazing, diffusion bonding and soldering for highly critical components. At Mat-Tech, we have a wealth of experience providing solutions to the industry and scientific research organisations, joining similar and dissimilar materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, copper, titanium, molybdenum, refractory metals, and ceramics from prototype and batch production to process development and volume manufacturing.
Mat-Tech Joining Technologies operate from two production facilities in the UK based in Stone, with one being dedicated to critical components manufactured for semiconductor machines.
Mat-Tech is headquartered in the Netherlands where there are two additional production and testing facilities.
Mat-Tech are able to assist with all projects from idea and concept through to prototype and mass production in fabrication of joining solutions such as brazing, diffusion bonding and soldering. Totally in the Mat-Tech Group, there are 11 vacuum furnaces with another 4 furnaces planned to come on line for 2025.
As technology advances, there is a high demand in complex and critical components for extreme applications where joining base metals and non-metals, both similar and dissimilar is a key aspect in design and future production ensuring that the components withstand the demanding service environments they operate in and can be manufactured with subsequent scaled production in mind. At Mat-Tech, we are a joining solution provider for all your critical components and a developing partner able to assist throughout your product life cycle from concept to maturity.

Vacuum Brazing
Vacuum brazing offers several advantages as the parts come out of the process clean and free of any discoloration and that the entire product is heated during the process. Full heating ensures good process control, which can limit unwanted distortion from local heating. Furthermore, brazing processes can also be perfectly combined with heat treatment of the base material such as hardening, solution annealing and magnetic annealing. Due to the precise process control, vacuum brazing offers the option of using brazing alloys that match the chosen base material very well in terms of chemical and mechanical properties.

Inspection and Testing
Quality comes first at Mat-Tech. That is why we have invested in our 3D X-ray ‘ultra-high performance micro focus’ inspection system. With the 3D X-ray we can very quickly create 2D- and 3D images with a very high resolution. Thanks to X-rays the 3D X-ray can visualize connections, that are invisible for a microscope. At Mat-tech, the 3D X-ray is mainly used for: Detecting of bridges and short circuits Detecting of cavities in the soldering Detecting of positioning and alignment errors on the printed circuits boards (PCB) Analysis of other soldering errors Quality control Density analysis Product contamination Measurements In addition at Mat-Tech Development & Testing (DAT) we are able to perform the following tests: - Visual and Cross-sectional Research Visual Inspection Optical Microscopy Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) X-ray Examination - Process Investigation Wettability/ Solderability Tests (Meniscography) Mechanical Tests Hardness Tests Shear Strength Test Tensile Strength Test Notch Impact Test - Environmental Tests Thermal Cycling Tests (TCT) Thermal Shock Tests (TST) Temperature/Humidity Tests High Temperature Storage Tests Vibration Test Corrosion Tests

Scanning Electronic Microscopy
At our Development and Testing (DAT) Department we specialise in developing, optimizing, and testing various joining solutions which often leads to introducing new ground-breaking solutions to challenging problems for the industry. At our laboratory, we are able to conduct testing and analysis of assemblies and components from a joining perspective with our Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) capabilities.

Diffusion Bonding
Diffusion bonding is a solid state joining technology for bonding similar and dissimilar materials together. The interfaces that are to be joined only undergo microscopic deformation and the joint area is homogeneous and bonding materialises at the atomic level. Diffusion bonding is carried out in a vacuum furnace under pressure with specially designed tooling. Due to the possibilities which diffusion bonding can offer, developing highly intricate and complex components such as those seen in heat exchangers have become possible. Diffusion bonding can also be used for dissimilar materials such as stainless steel to copper or ceramics. Here at Mat-Tech we have been actively developing diffusion bonding solutions for Big Science projects.
