Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick is helping to shape the next generation of manufacturing leaders through a leadership programme delivered as part of the Supply Chain Transition Programme.

WMG at the University of Warwick is helping develop future manufacturing leaders through a leadership programme delivered as part of the Supply Chain Transition Programme.

Liz McArdle, Innovation Manager for the SME Group at WMG, believes leadership is critical to future business success.

"We very much focus on future sustainable manufacturing leaders," said Liz. "Leadership doesn't mean you have to be a CEO or Managing Director. Change happens at every level of an organisation, and we need leaders throughout."

Delivered in a cohort format, the programme brings together professionals from a range of manufacturing backgrounds, creating opportunities for peer learning, collaboration and networking.

"From the outset, we emphasise the value of building relationships for future partnerships, innovation and support," Liz explained. "Participants bring significant experience, and sharing that practical knowledge is a key part of the learning."

The programme covers self-awareness, influencing skills, team development, communication, innovation and business change. Industry speakers also share real-world experiences of leadership, sustainability and innovation.

A key feature is the direct application of learning within participants' organisations. Each participant is supported by a senior sponsor to help address real business challenges.

"This isn't about case studies," said Liz. "Participants use what they learn to tackle real issues in their own businesses, whether that's introducing change, engaging stakeholders or strengthening innovation."

As manufacturers look to diversify and enter new supply chains, innovation and change management skills are becoming increasingly important.

"When you move into a new supply chain, you're dealing with unknowns," Liz added. "Collaboration is vital. Partnerships can provide expertise, insight and credibility."
