Composite Dynamic Machine Axis Beams
Carbon machine axis beams up to 50% lighter than steel, with higher damping for faster, more accurate motion.
Composite materials suit machine tool structures because of their high stiffness-to-mass ratio and better damping than steel.
On any cutting or milling machine, the horizontal and vertical axis beams have a major effect on performance: their mass and stiffness limit working area, accuracy and acceleration. Carbon composite can reduce beam weight by up to 50%, and the higher stiffness allows faster acceleration for the same deflection – essential for the positional accuracy needed to cut to tight tolerances.
CompoTech's process combines accurate fibre placement with pressing of square sections to give beams the straightness and accuracy required. The internal structure is designed to control torsional stiffness and to hold threaded inserts, positioned for the linear rails, drives and other attachments the beam must carry.
