The evolution of Advanced Engineering

Advanced Engineering is now in its 14th edition and has continued to be THE event for the engineering industry.

Advanced manufacturing sectors can network and source innovative new solutions from the engineering supply chains in R&D, design, test & measurement, advanced materials, manufacturing, and production.

Here’s a little overview of the evolution of Advanced Engineering over the years…

2009
Advanced Engineering begins life as a single show with 80 exhibitors, called ‘Aero Engineering’ in Manchester Central. In the same year, Google test drives the first self-driving car.
2010
A new co-located show is launched alongside Aero Engineering, the Composites Engineering show. In the same year, Apple launches the first tablet, the iPad.
2011
Now known as Advanced Engineering, the event moves to its own dedicated hall at the NEC. In the same year, Mars Curiosity is launched from Cape Canaveral.
2012
Automotive Engineering is launched as a new co-located show zone, and is the UK’s only fully dedicated event for the vehicle manufacturing supply chain. In the same year, the first Model S Tesla is produced.
2013
Advanced Engineering moves to Hall 5, the largest hall in the NEC and is now one of the fastest growing shows in NEC history. In the same year, human-movement-like robots are developed.
2014
Performance Metals Engineering is launched, focusing on the light weighting and strength benefits offered by magnesium, aluminium & titanium. In the same year, Google Glass, the first practical example of VR, is introduced.
2015
Advanced Engineering becomes part of Easyfairs, helping to increase attendee and exhibitor reach, and beginning a global portfolio. In the same year, reusable rockets are developed by the SpaceX program.
2016
Advanced Engineering is established on the engineering calendar as the UK’s largest annual event for advanced manufacturers and supply chain partners. In the same year, Amazon begin initial testing of delivery drones.
2017
Connected Manufacturing becomes the latest show zone to be introduced to Advanced Engineering, fully addressing Industry 4.0 & automation. In the same year, the world's first floating wind farm goes operational.
2018
Advanced Engineering continues to grow on its 10th anniversary, including increased sector coverage, and more dedicated face-to-face networking. In the same year, 3D metal printing is developed for volume manufacture.
2019
2019 saw the introduction of a new zone, Medical Device Engineering, focusing on the engineering requirements of current and future medical/biomedical devices & components. In the same year, Oculus Quest launched User-Friendly VR.
2020
Advanced Engineering launched AE Talks back in 2020 – a series of online events with industry-leading speakers covering the key topics in the manufacturing and engineering sector!
2021
The Product Testing & Quality Control show zone launched for the first time at Advanced Engineering! This was also the first year Advanced Engineering & Lab Innovations were co-located. In the same year, Boeing designed a drone that refuels fighter jets
2022
The Meet the Buyer schemes were held for the first time, in partnership with ADS & SMMT. Advanced Engineering also launched the Sustainability Trail and show app! In the same year. IBM debuted a new quantum processor, its biggest yet!
2023
There are big changes planned for 2023, including the development of the show floor and the introduction of the Advanced Engineering Main Stage! Stay tuned for more updates...
