About us
The British Institute of NDT is the professional institute for all those engaged in non-destructive testing and condition monitoring. It is concerned with the education and training of its members, and the advancement of the science and practice of the subjects.
Over its 50 years, the Institute has established itself as one of the country's leading engineering institutions, and has achieved professional engineering institute (PEI) status with the Engineering Council.
The object of the Institute is to promote the advancement of the science and practice of non-destructive testing, condition monitoring, diagnostic engineering and all other materials and quality testing disciplines. In achieving this aim, the Institute, which employs a permanent secretariat at its Northampton headquarters, relies on the support of personnel, companies and other organisations in the NDT and CM industries.

BINDT Membership
Membership of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing is a recognition of an individual or organisation's professional status within this vital sector of the engineering industry. Membership of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing is open to anyone or any company working in or having an interest in NDT, condition monitoring, diagnostic engineering, or materials and quality testing in general. Individual members range from students embarking on engineering, physics, metallurgy or a wide range of other courses, practitioners in the hands-on world, managers and academics, to research scientists. Company members come from an equally diverse range of industries – aerospace, power generation, oil and gas, petrochemical, universities to name but a few – as well as the equipment manufacturers and providers of specialist services, and consultancies. Company members are automatically members of the Institute's Industry Group
Insight - Non-Destructive Testing & Condition Monitoring
Insight – Non-Destructive Testing and Condition Monitoring is the Journal of The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing. It was launched in April 1994, replacing the former British Journal of Non-Destructive Testing and incorporating, in quarterly issues, the former European Journal of Non-Destructive Testing. Insight is published monthly and circulated worldwide to more than 65 countries. It covers NDT in its widest sense. Each issue includes technical articles on a broad range of subjects and general news stories affecting the whole industry. Insight contains: Technical and scientific reviews. Original research and development papers. Practical case studies and surveys. Details of products and services. Newsdesk – contract and marketing news from the industry. NDT Info – the world's most comprehensive serially published survey of NDT literature. Technical literature – a comprehensive review of relevant literature, including the latest international standards and safety information. International Diary – comprehensive listing of information and Calls for Papers concerning relevant events, conferences, symposia and exhibitions. Profiles on personalities and organisations associated with the industry. Each issue embraces matter that is highly relevant to a wide range of readers, including engineers, technicians, academics and scientists, appealing to practitioners and young graduates alike. Insight's features programme is engineered to provide a balanced platform with a broad scope, maximising readership appeal.
Product Technology Online Training
In response to a demand from industry, ISO 9712:2022, the standard to which the PCN Scheme operates with respect to NDT certification, now requires that all candidates demonstrate a prior understanding of materials and processes, also known as 'product technology', before undertaking training in any method in order to supplement their knowledge of the specific methods and techniques to which they are seeking certification. To meet this requirement, BINDT has developed a new interactive online Product Technology training course to help PCN candidates achieve the required knowledge in a convenient way and at a time and pace that suits them. The course is now available worldwide. The online training course includes learning modules covering industrial materials, manufacturing processes and an introduction to non-destructive testing (NDT), with material presented in a clear and concise format through a range of videos, high-resolution images and graphs. Course content is organised in a logical manner, starting with how metals are created, through the processing of the raw materials to form components and the NDT methods and applications used to inspect them.

Howard Garlick joins BINDT as Technical and Certification Engineer
The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) has announced that Howard Garlick has joined the organisation as a Technical and Certification Engineer, effective 23 June 2025.
Inspiring the next generation: NDT outreach at Drayton Park Primary School
