Pyromeral Systems S.A.
About us
Pyromeral Systems is a french company created in 1984.
We produce and manufacture ceramic composite for high-performance applications resistant to flames and extreme temperatures up to 1300°C. Our innovations offer unmatched thermal resistance, lightweight properties, thickness and structural integrity, positioning us as a leader in this niche market.
Operating in highly demanding industries, Pyromeral Systems specializes in replacing traditional metallic components with lightweight, high-temperature-resistant composites that enhance efficiency, safety, and durability. Our expertise extends across four key markets:
• Motorsports (F1, WRC, Le Mans, IndyCar) : Since 20 years we optimize vehicle performances through advanced lightweight heat-resistant materials. For these applications : heatshields for brakes and turbochargers, thermal barriers and insulation, exhaust gas guides and exhaust pipes.
• New Mobilities eVTOLS hybrid flying vehicles: Lightweight and passenger protection in case of fire generated by thermal runaway event are some of challenges faced by Evtols developpers / manufacturers. Involved in more than 10 projects worldwide, reaching pre-industrialisation level on some cases, Pyromeral successfully meets the challenge. Our materials have demonstrated exceptional results in the UL2596 Torch & Grid tests, proving their ability to withstand extreme operational conditions similarly as our results on AC20-135 aeronautic kerosene flame test passed with very thin material (0.6 mm thickness).
Moreover, in 2023, the company achieved a world-first by successfully inducing in flight thermal runaway in drone batteries. The results showcased the resilience of Pyromeral’s materials in real-world conditions. Upcoming tests on eVTOLS batteries are highly anticipated and look promising.
• Defense: Delivering cutting-edge radome solutions and protective materials for high-speed military applications like conical hollow structures on missiles.
• Aerospace & UAVs: Enhancing payload capacity, thermal resistance, and operational efficiency in next-generation of aircrafts. For example this is used for heatshields for space reactors.
Pyromeral Systems has developed three proprietary ceramic composite families (patented technologies):
• PyroKarb – Providing outstanding flame and heat resistance while maintaining ultra-low density (<1.7 kg/dm³), making it an optimal material for safety-critical components.
• PyroSic – A high-strength, lightweight solution for motorsports and aerospace applications, offering exceptional mechanical stability under heat.
• PyroXide – Designed for extreme thermal and electromagnetic resistance, ideal for radomes and structural aerospace components. They can be used as structural component on high temperature areas (800 – 1000°C).
Pyromeral composites often replace metals on high temperature areas. Our materials are up to 2 times lighter than titanium and 4 times than inconels, ensuring significant weight reduction without compromising strength. They integrate advanced fiber and matrix compositions, including carbon (C), silicon carbide (SiC), and alumina (Al₂O₃), bound with patented inorganic matrices (silico-aluminate or alumino-phosphatic). These characteristics enable:
• Superior heat shielding and flame resistance.
• Lightweight structural integrity, essential for high-speed vehicles and defense.
• Abrasion and thermal runaway resistance, crucial for eVTOLs and UAVs operating under extreme conditions.
Pyromeral Systems is committed to driving innovation in future mobility technologies, including eVTOLs, UAVs, and hypersonic vehicles. Our composites play a crucial role in:
• Battery casing for electric aviation, preventing thermal runaway and fire propagation.
• Enhanced performance in UAVs, missiles, and aircraft, reducing weight while maintaining structural resilience.
• Radome technology for defense applications, ensuring radio-frequency transparency and thermal stability at elevated temperatures.
We also provoked a thermal runaway test on a drone in flight. For this, we placed 25 cells inside a Pyromeral ceramic composite box and overheated them to trigger a fire. This test is a world first, demonstrating the efficiency and resilience of our components.
Awarded in 2023 under the French post-Covid industrial recovery plan, Pyromeral Systems received state financial help to support a project: A new impregnation machine to respond the demanding requirements of the defense and aerospace sectors.
Products

PyroKarb
PyroKarb technology is a glass ceramic composite material that is completely flame resistant shield. Main current applications are battery casing for UAM and e-VTOL.

PyroXide
PyroXide is our alternative to oxide/oxide technologies. We have developed a matrix system that enables to get a real Prepreg material and manufacture complex shaped oxide components in much easier way. In addition to retain good mechanical properties even beyond 1000°C, the material solution also propose very good RF properties, even at elevated temperatures.

PyroSic
PyroSic is a glass ceramic composite, using SiC fibre and that can withstand high temperatures for heatshields near brakes, near engine areas and for exhaust components.
