Leybold launch new ready to go pump solution
The TURBOLAB Core range are our entry level vacuum stations made for both industrial and scientific settings, popular within academia, they are ideal for smaller scale research laboratories. Combining a primary-pump, turbomolecular pump, and controller into one unit, they bring simple plug-and-play functionality to many applications across science with minimal fuss. Originally launched in 2021 the TURBOLAB Core 90i and 250i came with the robust DIVAC 1.4 diaphragm pump as standard, offering primary pumping speeds of 1.4 cubic liters per hour. Our customers now have the option of a new variant, launched in October 2023, which comes with the SCROLLVAC 3S as the backing pump. Along with increased pumping speeds from 1.4 to 3 cubic meters per hour, it also delivers better ultimate pressure of 0.1 mbar within the same footprint, an important consideration in today’s environmentally aware climate. Our commitment to producing vacuum solutions that enable clean and carbon neutral products is further demonstrated by the move to oil-free, scroll vacuum technology that the SCROLLVAC 3S employs. With extra protection in the event of a power failure, via the integrated inlet valve, along with fully replaceable parts, this new variant is built to last, with fewer maintenance intervals, which is great news for the end users who employ and maintain stations on a daily basis. Speaking about the new addition to the TURBOLAB range, product manager Petr Lastovicka said “The TURBOLAB Core has been very a successful product for small R&D labs and academia. We are really excited to further improve this model by adding our latest scroll technology and increasing the performance, efficiency, and reliability of this product.”

Leybold launches small high vacuum system for research and development, laboratories and industrial applications
With the TURBOLAB Core, vacuum specialist Leybold is launching a small plug-and-play high vacuum pumping system for research and laboratory and industrial applications. Within the TURBOLAB series, the compact tabletop unit fills the gap for entry-level vacuum needs that require a clean, dry, stable high and ultra-high vacuum. The TURBOLAB series is now available in a total of five variants featuring TURBOVAC 90 i and 250 i backed by DIVAC 1.4 and now covers the complete application spectrum for R&D and analytical applications. Modular platform, easy service The ergonomic, cost-effective system is made up of proven Leybold components: including the oil- and maintenance-free TURBOVAC i turbomolecular pump, the DIVAC 1.4 dry diaphragm backing pump and a simple controller. This provides users with the benefit of easy serviceability. Foundation prevents vibrations The equipment of the robust, low-noise high-vacuum system is geared to the specific ambient conditions of laboratories and research facilities: This is one of the reasons why the compact pumping station frame stands on rubber feet. "With this foundation, we prevent the transmission of vibrations, for example when the TURBOLAB Core is placed close to a microscope", explains the responsible Leybold product manager, Petr Lastovicka. User friendly interface Both the operation and the control of the TURBOLAB Core are intuitive and user-friendly - the controller also serves as a speed and pressure display. Optionally, the TURBOVAC i as well as the backing pump DIVAC can be started up with a time delay or pressure-dependent. Coordinated model "The bottom line is that with the compact TURBOLAB Core model we are rounding off our portfolio with a perfectly tuned model downwards," he says. "It will convince users with excellent pumping performance, a good price-performance ratio as well as simple operation and ease of maintenance," sums up product manager Petr Lastovicka.

Leybold offers online sound checks for vacuum pumps
With this free tool, users receive immediate feedback regarding the condition of their vacuum pumps. Available initially for VARODRY and NOVADRY Simply record a sequence of your pump's sound with your smartphone or tablet directly at sound.leybold.com or upload the sound file. The sound analysis is then used to determine whether the pump is running properly or if service is due. This feature initially applies to the Leybold VARODRY and NOVADRY oil-free screw vacuum pumps but will be extended to other pumps in the future. The operating noise reflects the pump's condition Using an intelligent test algorithm, Leybold draws upon its extensive vacuum expertise. "Through our many years of experience, we now know exactly to what extent a pump's operating noise indicates its condition," explains Dr. Sina Forster, the project manager heading up this project for Leybold. Concrete Service Recommendations While the human ear can't perceive various pump noises above a certain frequency, the app can quickly and objectively detect the condition of the gears and/or bearings. If deviations occur, they're detected immediately by the test algorithm, and the probability of an error is then displayed. "From an acoustic analysis of the vacuum pump, we can come up with specific recommendations and schedules for service and maintenance work, such as belt changes," explains Dr. Forster. Business management advantage This sound analysis represents a major economic advantage and encourages compliance with suggested service intervals. Based on the test results, customers can contact Leybold Service directly and transmit the sound data for a more detailed analysis. Depending on the condition of the vacuum pump, it can be determined if service is due without the need for a service call. As such, repair and maintenance work, in addition to downtimes for the entire system, can be anticipated and planned.

Leybold offers VARODRY VDi system for industrial vacuum processes
In industrial vacuum processes, the requirements for smart performance management and energy efficiency are constantly increasing. For more intelligence, variability and efficiency in coating, drying and heat treatment processes, vacuum specialist Leybold has therefore developed the VARODRY VDi vacuum system with integrated VAControl CAB control. The pump systems of the new series consist of the air-cooled, oil-free VARODRY screw pumps, the dry-compressing Roots pumps of the RUVAC series as well as the VAControl CAB control for smart management of all pump processes. Dry vacuum solutions, high pumping speed, lots of flexibilit "In concrete terms, users today expect dry, flexible vacuum solutions with a high pumping speed. Therefore, quick and uncomplicated adjustment possibilities of the vacuum performance to the respective process conditions are necessary," says the responsibleProduct Manager, Dennis Schröder, outlining the requirement profile. Schröder adds that, especially with rising energy prices, customers do not want to worry about unplanned process and maintenance costs. To meet their profitability and sustainability goals, the energy and resource consumption should therefore be as low as possible and calculable.

Leybold presents the NDi central vacuum system for food & packaging, research & development and analytical applications.
In applications requiring a clean central vacuum, the new standardised vacuum system NDi ensures a reliable supply. The innovation from Leybold is based on the dry-running NOVADRY screw pump, which is robust over the entire pressure range, and the integrated VAControl CAB controller for smart control. The range of applications for the NDI central system includes food and packaging processes, research & development, vacuum conveying systems as well as medical and laboratory applications. Hygiene, economy, reliability In these areas of application, hygiene, economy, reliability, compactness and ease of operation are important to the operators. For vacuum values such as the final pressure or pumping speed, process-dependent flexibility is required. "In view of these requirements, the strengths of our oil-free, air-cooled screw vacuum pump NOVADRY come into their own", emphasises the responsible Product Manager, Dennis Schröder. "In addition to accumulating air and water vapour mixtures, the robust screw vacuum pump introduced in 2019 tolerates, among other things, contamination of the gas flow with organic acids, food additives or other residues. This ensures long operating times," Schröder continues. Smart control of all processes By equipping the standardised NDi pump systems with the VAControl CAB, Leybold ensures intelligent control of all processes. Continuous data recording ensures maximum production quality, with the encrypted pump data available regardless of location. Individual users can access the server at any time - users can choose between local, remote or cloud connectivity. Direct control of the system is possible via various interfaces and end devices.

Leybold releases a series of robust and reliable cold cathode and wide range gauges
The active PENNINGVAC series PTR 90/225 RN utilize multiple enhancements to increase the gauges service intervals in harsh applications. This coupled with the ultra-low turn on pressure enabled in the combined sensor leads to a sensor suitable across a wide range of applications requiring rough to high vacuum measurement. PENNINGVAC PTR225RN - 90RN Zoom in PENNINGVAC PTR 225 RN: Pure cold cathode Our cold cathode gauges use the PENNING principle of cold cathode ionization. Their measuring range of 10-2 to 10-9 enables you to measure into the high vacuum region. To control the turning on of the gauge, it would be best combined with one of our THERMOVAC or CERAVAC gauges. By separating out the technology, you have the option to decide how you want to control the gauges turn on point. As with most of our active gauges: we have both analogue 0-10 V linear outputs and digital communications available. PENNINGVAC PTR225RN - 90RN Zoom in PENNINGVAC PTR 90 RN: Combined cold cathode gauges Our combined cold cathode gauges use the inverted magnetron principle of cold cathode ionization and is combined with a pirani gauge. By combining the technologies into a single more compact sensor, the measuring range is increased enabling a reliable pressure measurement from atmosphere to 1 x 10-9. The on/off function of the cold cathode is controlled automatically by the integrated pirani, seamlessly eliminating any risk of running the cold cathode at too high a pressure which could lead to a reduced lifespan. Both analogue 0-10v linear outputs and digital communications are available. https://www.leybold.com/en-uk/news/leybold-releases-a-series-robust-and-reliable-cold-cathode-and-wide-range-gauges

Leybold sponsor Dutch racing team
Leybold sponsor Formula Student Team Delft in their biggest challenge to date, to win Formula Student Germany (FSG) with their latest car, the DUT23. Racing against around 100 other teams from around the world, where their self-build racing cars are judged against several performance tests and must have a viable business plan. To be first over the line Formula Student Team Delft need to design and build the fastest and most consistent car, and one of the biggest challenges is that of weight. The car needs to be as lightweight as possible, so a large portion of the chassis and aerodynamics are made from composites, usually carbon fibre. These parts are cured under a vacuum environment, and vacuum pumps are an essential part of this process. It’s paramount that the vacuum pumps can create and maintain a very low pressure in the vacuum bags. This allows the carbon fibres to compress better, achieves good strength and stiffness, and significantly decreases the possibility of defects in the final product. “As part of the sponsorship Leybold have kindly donated two SOGEVAC 16B rotary vane pumps to the team.” Says Moritz Rokitta, Chief Chassis Formula Student Team Delft. “We produce most of our carbon parts in-house, so we need our tools and materials, including vacuum pumps, to be reliable and easy to maintain.” “Leybold are excited to back Formula Student Team Delft in their race to electric, providing them with the vacuum know-how and technology to help the get on the top step of podium and be the winning team in 2023.” Says Ian Dorman, General Manager Leybold. “Our vacuum technology enables many aspects of car production, from the materials for improved performance and strength to the manufacture of li-ion batteries" FSG23 will take place from 14th to 20th August 2023 in Hockenheim, Germany, and Team Leybold will be waving the flag for Formula Student Team Delft. In addition to the sporting competition, the event serves not least the worldwide networking of young scientists as well as the sustainable promotion of innovation and research. "In times of climate change, we see a responsibility in concretely promoting the efficient use of renewable energy potentials and thus contributing to the reduction of air pollution," says Ian Dorman, General Manager of Leybold EMEA North East, explaining the sponsorship of the vacuum specialist. Competitive solar car developed The commitment of the Dutch team is also worthy of sponsorship for other reasons: after all, the 19 students of the Solar Team Twente had interrupted their studies for a year and a half to develop and build a competitive solar car. Leybold’s sponsorship with the SOGEVAC 16 D vacuum pump allows the team to continue processing carbon and epoxy by means of vacuum infusion and lamination either in-house, or when required locally at the race site, due to the pumps compact and portable design. "This has also been achieved with the help of the support of our sponsors, so we feel well equipped and motivated to compete for the title in Morocco," emphasises Structural Designer, Stijn Louws. After all, the Dutch have already been successful in past world championships for solar cars. With their wealth of experience, companies like Leybold can also significantly promote electromobility and thus contribute to the success of the energy transition. Especially since vacuum systems are used, for example, in the coating of solar modules or in the production of lithium-ion batteries. This is another reason why those responsible for Solar Team Twente choose renowned partners like Leybold to lead such challenges to success.

The Leybold Hygienic Enclosure for vacuum pumps has won Product of the Year Cases and Enclosures. The Awards celebrate the very best professionals, products, projects and companies from across the test, measurement, sensing and control sectors. Leybold UK was honoured and pleased to receive the Instrumentation Excellence Awards during the award ceremony on 19th October in London. Hygienic Enclosures for Vacuum Pumps Food Safety is essential for the food market and typically food producers & processors disinfect their installations and machines daily just to guarantee a high Food Safety level. Vacuum pumps are mainly built-in or installed next to the machinery and that’s with only poor or even no protection at all. Most vacuum pumps cannot cope with daily washdowns, especially with aggressive cleaning media, these result in corroded vacuum pumps, reduced life cycles or even increased risks of pollution. To avoid this, Leybold has developed a range of Stainless-Steel Hygienic Enclosures. The enclosures are simple and don’t interfere with the pump’s operations. "Receiving the Product of the Year Award in this category in particular is a special recognition of the quality of our products in the area of food processing,” says Juliane Garz, Business Line Manager Leybold. “It’s impossible to overstate the importance of safety and quality in food manufacturing and with the Hygienic Enclosure food applications can now be operated more hygienically, ergonomically and flexibly.” https://instrumentationawards.co.uk/winners-2023/ https://www.leybold.com/content/leybold/en-uk/news/hygienic-enclosures-for-vacuum-pumps-ensure-highest-hygiene-standards

Lift-assist hinges instead of gas springs! No gas loss and compact size allowed for effective use of space inside the device.
Our lift-assist hinge HG-PA230-25 was used in a chip mounting machine’s lid cover. This case illustrates how replacing gas springs with our product saves space and eliminates the concern over the loss of gas and lubrication oil associated with gas springs. PROBLEM Key Issues 1- There was not enough space inside the machine to install gas springs, but an assist function for opening the lid was still needed. 2- The chip mounter’s indicator light needed to be clearly visible. The Solution 1-The use of lift-assist hinges combines the hinge and lift-assist function into one product. In addition, the HG-PA230’s spring operation eliminates the risk of gas loss associated with gas springs. The hinge also makes the lid easier to close. 2-The hinges could be mounted on the inside of the device to make the stacked indicator lights easier to see. 3-The Sasuga-kun selection tool made product selection easy and simulation was possible before prototype testing.
